ASCOT WOODIE the Champion Greyhound!

12” x 16” oil on board

I was really excited to be offered a commission to paint this amazing greyhound. He can be seen here (left) winning the ‘Coral Champion Stakes Final’ in 2016 by a fraction of a nose equating to 0.01 of a second!

It’s not often you get to see a painting in action - you can watch his race here!

He’s retired now and living a life of luxury by the seaside.

Now It’s not in my nature to be messy - and it goes against the grain to start a painting in this way but sometimes it’s a ‘necessary evil’ for creating texture and random marks! I wanted to place emphasis on the kicked-up sand to give the painting movement and drama. The sand spraying up between the dogs helps to separate them and the gold dust catches your eye as you move past the painting and catch it in a certain light. What an amazing moment it must have been for his owner and trainer as he won the race – so exciting!

I love the way the light is bouncing off the sand to light-up his underbelly.
