SPIN
Clematis
8” x 8” oil on board
Trying here to breakaway from copying the photo reference and put my own spin on it. I’m not 100% sure about the shadow yet but it adds drama!
I’m doing these little colour swatches to show students the number of mixes required for each element of the painting.
I premix my colours with a palette knife.
At the very least for the petals you need a warm and cool ‘light’ a warm and cool ‘midtone ’ and a warm and cool ‘dark’. Then it’s a case of deciding what’s going where!
I will be teaching a workshop on 7 October @micklemsfarmcreativeworkshops called ‘Mind the Gap’. We will be painting a small group of climbing flowers such as Clematis or Roses. Working ‘alla prima’ in oil paint we will focus on leaving bits of our under-painting peeking through. We will look at ways of applying the paint in a dynamic and interesting way: focusing on colour, brushwork and composition.
