LUSH

LUSH
8” x 8” oil on board.

Abstraction does not come easy to me - but I do love it. I find that when I can get myself into a gear where I’m just seeing a collection of shapes and colours, forgetting the subject matter, forgetting elements that don’t work and focusing on what works only for the composition- the magic happens. An aerial view is a good place to start, then premixing a combination of colours that are not necessarily what I see, but what I want to use. I’ve been wanting to work in corals and olive greens for ages now and never found the right flower/ leaf combo…so I decided to take charge of my palette, mix the colours I wanted to use and put them where I wanted to put them even if the still life said otherwise! Learning NOT to copy is hard but I know I’ve done enough of these flower paintings now to start to trust my own judgement more!
