DAISY-MAE the Birman Cat

12” x 12” oil on board.

This little lady is now 18 years old! It’s not often I’d describe an animal as ‘mushroom’ coloured...but it’s a good description of her! Sometimes when you know an animal is pale coloured it can be very hard to convince yourself that the shadow colours are correct.  I use an ap called @coolors.co whereby I can select a pinpoints on the photo and get a square blocks of true colour as a reference (see pic 2). I premix these colours on my palette before I start painting so that I am on the right track from the off, aiming to get it’ right first time’ with no re-working. I’ll often drag one colour through another on the palette before applying it to get variation and subtle ‘streaks’. The way to get the fur soft and fluffy round the edge is to use a big flat brush and to drag your background colour into the animals fur and Visa versa. Working wet in wet with oils in this way really pleases me- it’s what oils are made for!
